Bush on Himself

A tip from Skippy at the American Street sent me searching for a nugget from today's presidential Q&A with reporters:

Q Mr. President, does this John Edwards selection force you to spend more time in the South, and change your strategy in the southern states now?

...

THE PRESIDENT: Well, talk to -- talk to the schedulers. I'm not the scheduler, I'm just a simple candidate. (Laughter.)

Shouldn't the president at least make some pretense of showing himself as involved in major political decisions? It's literally a joke between him and the press corps that he gets led around by his advisors.

On the topic of dumb quotes by world leaders, Chris Bertram at Crooked Timber points to a nice pair from Tony Blair:

We are asked to accept that, contrary to all intelligence, Saddam decided to destroy those weapons. I say that such a claim is palpably absurd. (Tony Blair, 18 March 2003)

I have to accept that we have not found them and we may not find them. He [Saddam] may have removed or hidden or even destroyed those weapons. (Tony Blair 6 July 2004)

At least Blair has the stones to reverse himself, whereas the White House keeps trumpeting bogus WMD claims. Maybe it's not so good having a "simple" man making wartime decisions.
